My Five Favourite Sport Photographs of 2016
I wanted to reflect on the past year by selecting my five favourite sport photographs from 2016. You can view each image and learn more about them below!
OAKVILLE, ON – Aug. 15, 2016: A silhouetted player brings down the ball under a golden sunset.
As the sun was setting over the pitch, I noticed that the trees were creating some extremely harsh shadows. I quickly re-positioned myself to produce a silhouette, and waited for the action to come my way. Eventually, a long cross-field pass was brought down directly in front of me, and I captured this shot with minimal post-processing required.
OAKVILLE, ON – Nov. 5, 2016: Sheridan player charges past a Seneca defender at the inaugural OCAA Women’s Rugby Sevens championship.
With play continually going back and forth, I positioned myself near the middle of the pitch. I wanted to try and capture the intense physicality of a close contest between Sheridan and Seneca. As a ruck broke down, I was able to photograph this brutal image within ten feet of where I was seated.
TORONTO, ON – Nov. 12, 2016 – Tremaine Hibbert of the Sheridan Bruins tries to release a short jumper against Tyrone Dickson of the Humber Hawks.
The arena was packed, and the clock was ticking down. In a close game between the Sheridan Bruins and Humber Hawks, the ball was picked up in the post by Hibbert. I looked over, and noticed Dickson closely guarding him. I was able to capture this photograph as Hibbert pulled up for a short fadeaway jumper with a hand in his face.
OAKVILLE, ON – Oct. 1, 2016: The George Brown Huskies goalkeeper reaches for the ball in a game against the Sheridan Bruins.
For this image, I was positioned near the 6-yard line, and following the George Brown goalkeeper as he leaped for the ball on a corner. Instead of the ball, he grabbed an opponent’s head!
OAKVILLE, ON – Jun. 14, 2016: A goalkeeper dives helplessly for a shot destined for the top-left corner.
I was seated near the 18-yard line, and following a player as he dribbled mid-way down the pitch. He suddenly and unexpectedly launched a 35-yard strike, catching me (and the goalkeeper) off-guard.
I spun my camera to the right and fired. The ball was perfectly placed, striking the post and crossbar in the top-left corner before going in. I was able to capture the strike and the goalkeeper as he hopelessly dived for the ball, producing an image that turned out to be my favourite of 2016!
